Cold Calling - How You Can Overcome Fear and Succeed

If there's one thing in marketing that scares small businesses to death it's got to be cold calling. When you are in business, try to keep the assumptions as low as possible. The fact is that this approach to marketing is still effective, otherwise it would have been abandoned years ago. This is true whether you are doing internet marketing or if your business is primarily offline. Here are some things that won't make it easier, but can make it more profitable for you.

It's not recommended that you call too early or too late during the day, so that sets limits on you. If you want to be professional about this, then find information that explains when you should call and why. If you finish those calls before the time you've set is up, just move on to the next task on your to-do list. If you use up your time, add the ones you meant to do today to the next day's to-call list. Think about the fact that you'll be talking to regular people and never take anything personal if they reject you.

Always be respectful of the person's time because everybody is busy, so make sure that you don't let the call drag on and on. You will usually have to be fast on your feet in the event they are not able to talk more about it. Don't be shy about rescheduling for another time, and that will usually be approved. You can tell when someone doesn't feel like talking but maybe they're uncomfortable with telling you - so use that as your guide. What you want to do is get a lead or make them a warmer prospect for follow ups.

Do not call all day long trying to get the person. This will just make you seem desperate. Just call during the hours that you have set up for cold calling. This makes you seem organized. You will have to have other professional alternatives. This means that you will seem credible and professional. Yes, you still might not get a call back, but that is life. You do not want to seem crazy.

You will need to be patient with yourself if you decide that cold calling is worth your efforts. You can expect to make mistakes and feel foolish, just laugh at it and learn to do better next time but never quit. Take action on this and learn all you need to know so you can do it well, and then it's just getting experience.
