New page

So you've learned to make your own website, you've got all your ideas and products out there, and you're waiting anxiously for some visitors. To your surprise, very few are showing up. But you know, building a website without doing some promotion is a little like throwing a party and forgetting to send invitations. If no one knows it's there, they won't show up. After all, the internet is huge, and it just keeps growing with an estimated 150,000 new domains registered daily.

So obviously website promotion is important; but how does it work? Well whether you've hired a developer to build your site for you or you've chosen to make your own website, there are plenty of simple strategies - both online and offline - to get your site noticed.

Traditional Promotion

Traditional strategies are still very much in use, and you likely utilize at least a few of them in promoting your business. Include your URL on all of your business stationery, including business cards, letterhead, brochures, and any other printed material that is used to promote your company. If you use other print, TV, or other advertising, always include a mention of your website. Just remember, in print, you don't need to use the whole "http://" thing.

Email Promotion

If you have a mailing list, however, make sure that you actively promote your website through emails. Include a link to your website in your email signature. Send out a regular newsletter with a mention of and link to your website. Invite people to sign up for your newsletter, and send special offers to email subscribers so that they regularly are reminded to visit your site. Offer special coupons that can only be redeemed through your website.

Just remember: DON'T SPAM. It's illegal in many countries, and it won't win you any customers.

Social Media Promotion

Social media is a great way to get your site noticed as people naturally interact, post links, and comment on others' posts and comments. Social networking sites, social bookmarking sites, blogs, and forums are all types of social media, and each can be used in specific ways to generate traffic to your site.

Setting up a business page on sites like Facebook and LinkedIn is a great way to get news of your site out there. As friends and customers comment on your service or product, it will generate interest in others. A business blog is also a great way to generate interest. If you offer regular, helpful content that is relevant to your industry, people will take note and link to it.
