Honolulu is the capital of Hawaii situated on Hawaii's 3rd largest island – Oahu – in
the Pacific Ocean. Honolulu city is on Oahu's southeastern coast but the entire island
is called Honolulu County. The word Honolulu means "protected bay" and as the
name suggests the city developed around a bay. Honolulu is divided into districts
the best known of which is Waikiki there is also the historic site of Pearl Harbor, a
dynamic city, miles of white sandy beaches and not far away from the city center is
lush natural countryside.

Hawaii was settled by Polynesians from the Marquesas Islands about 1,500
years ago, 500 years ago the Tahiti settlers arrived and Hawaii's unique culture
evolved. Captain Cook brought the white man to the islands in 1791 and in 1810 the
Hawaiian Royal family was formed from a unification of the various tribes on the
islands. The noble royals ruled the islands until 1893 when the American colonists
contrived a coup getting Queen Liliuokalani to abdicate. The Hawaiian culture was
also influenced by the influx of Asian and Portuguese immigrants who came to work
on the sugar and pineapple plantations. Hawaii officially became the 50th state of the
USA in 1959.

Hawaii is one of the most beautiful places in the world with a unique culture and
friendly locals who welcome visitors who come to enjoy the sun and surf, inimitable
volcano landscape and the lush, green rainforests.
