Three hours before me with nothing to learn isn't a positive thing, and so i headed towards the magazine stand and acquired "The Last Lecture" by Randy Pausch.

For those who do not know it, it is about a professor from Carnegie Mellon who provides a lecture to his university after he learns that he has terminal cancer. He wanted this lecture to concentrate on living, not dying, so he turned it in to a sort of "how to reside your life" theme.

Since Pausch was an educator, he loved the thought of "the head fake". He described the "head fake" being an educational objective which is "indirectly learned" or even "hidden" until the end. It is something which is taught but not realized until someone is well in to the process.

What they want these to learn is the value of work, sportsmanship, teamwork and gain a chance to deal with adversity.

It is the things they learn and whatever they become from being a part of the activity that are most critical.

I can't think that I am going past an acceptable limit from a limb in praoclaiming that some coaches and parents have lost sight of these hidden lessons in sports. Obtaining the patience permit the procedure unfold so the lessons can be learned has taken a back seat to winning and playing time issues.

I might love to see coaches embrace their role as "head fake" specialists on two fronts.
