Metallica and no selling out

When  i was eighteen i don't forget my brother coming back house in California using a new cd from a band known as Metallica: kill them all. The sound were as well avant gardiste for me at the beginning. I wan in to the typical deep purple, Kiss, Aerosmith rock.     

  Then i read the Metallica stories and interviews in French rock magazines. Metallica was  pretty much completly unknows inside the USA. But Metallica ahad a bit following in Europe, specially the scandinavian nations, Germany and France. The interviewers had been asking James hatefiels, kirk hamett, cliff burton and lars ulrich why would they not transform their music to have extra airplay and sell much more cd's and be accepted by the common audiences?     

  Then Metallica answered, that they are going to not sell out, they would rather die and cease playing music than play hair band music of dance music!
